About the Maker
Kurt Dölling
(1909 - 1990)
Kurt Dölling learnt bow making from Hermann Todt in Erlback from 1924 to 1927. He worked for C. A. Hoyer in Markneukirchen and for E. M. Penzel during his journeyman’s years. In 1939, he completed his Markneukirchen master’s exam in bow making in 1939. His works are perfect examples of classic early 20th century German bow making traditions.
He served in WWII and was a prisoner of war. In 1949, four years after the war, he opened his own workshop in Erlback, his hometown.
Dölling was a the stepfather and mentor of C. Hans-Kark Schmidt, the partner in his workshop. Schmidt went on to open his own workshop in Dresden, and is the father and mentor of bowmaker C. Daniel Schmidt.
